CASE STUDY: Irish-American Club

Cleveland's eastside Irish-American Club came to Interspective Design Unlimited for design expertise in the creation of an authentic Irish pub and meeting hall within the club's two level building. Through research, meetings with project contractors and club members' fond Irish recollections and wishes, our design team was able to work through every phase of the project from concept through completion. Now club members feel as though they are back at the corner pub in Dublin!

The approximately 1,000 square foot pub space features subtle details and treatments unique to Irish traditions.

"Kathy listened to our input and the reactions of club members and adapted the space into what it is today," said Jack McGarry, liaison to the Irish-American Club and a retired commercial painting contractor. "We led her with our initial suggestions and she grabbed hold of the project and came up with some great ideas which we ultimately used."

In developing this project, particular attention was given to finishing touches. From the wood paneling, stained glass, double entry doors, decorative moldings, window treatments and wall sconces, the goal was to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where club members and guests find comfort and relaxation.

In addition to the pub area, Kathy was selected again to update the club's main hall. This 600-seat capacity facility is used for private parties, meetings, rummage sales, special events and wedding receptions.

We took care in choosing both modular and patterned hospitality quality carpeting, furnishings and architectural wall moldings within the main level space. Because of the variety of events held in the hall, both its versatility and functionality had to be sensitively considered.

"Club members and visitors continue to have highly positive reactions to both spaces," noted McGarry.

CASE STUDY: Coventry Library

The Cleveland Heights Library System approached Kathy's team to restore and reconfigure this special public library space. An historical landmark building in the Coventry community had fallen into disrepair when the team was hired for their expertise and vision in its restoration.

The Coventry Library project required new building programming as well as code and electronic systems updates by the staff of architects and engineers. This project offered many challenges, primarily its strict budget constraints. This required flexibility and imagination in reconfiguring the space, using as many of the existing elements as possible.

The design team began with inventive space planning and updating cosmetic elements. Using existing furniture and wall and lighting elements, they were able to remarkably enhance and show off the beautiful inherent qualities in the building. This was achieved through highlighting the ceiling details, implementing a carpeting scheme of companion products and echoing the color scheme established in updates for the existing furniture and new draperies.

The community response to the redesign was overwhelming at its rededication ceremony. Within a tight budget, the Coventry Library was presented to the community as a completely renovated space. As the functional needs of the library were growing, the space was able to complement and tastefully integrate technological progress.

CASE STUDY: Case Western Reserve University's Guilford House

The Mather College Alumni Ladies Committee and Case Western Reserve archivist were faced with a unique challenge: Revitalizing once popular spaces so private parties would want to utilize them again for meetings, bridal showers, dinners and other university-sanctioned events.

The challenge in this project was to maintain the quaint and historical feeling critical to the ambiance of the space. Kathy and her associates recreated the former Victorian feeling once present by carefully integrating a variety of antique furniture bequests with new pieces in a conservative, lively fashion.

Familiar with color schemes and ambiance present in similar hospitality settings, designers maintained a traditional feeling while updating the space with bright, modern elements. The jewel tone color palette of the tapestry seat on an antique chair was selected for its universal appeal.

It is common to be placed on a waiting list to book these spaces for small gatherings and private events. Mather alumni are so pleased with the final results that they pamper these areas and are very proud of what Guilford House has become again.
